His mom, Julia, used to be a mechanical engineer before she retired. She’s been to almost every game Zach played, even giving out t-shirts with his nickname “The Big Maple” to fans.
In an interview, Zach shared about his close bond with his mom and a special deal they made.
“She retired going into my freshman year of college. That was always kind of our deal. She had said, basically, if I get a D1 scholarship then financially, she could retire. That kind of was a big reason why I wanted to get one of those scholarships. It’s obviously been great.”
His mom explained that they made this decision for financial reasons, and it has turned out well for them.
“I remember being so touched and at the same time concerned, and I said to him, ‘Hey, that’s not your responsibility. I love that you’re worried about wanting me to be there and part of this, but at the same time don’t take responsibility for that.’ It meant a lot to him getting that scholarship knowing that he could help give me those options and it meant a lot to me. I was thinking, I’m not missing a second of this.”

When Zach Edey was young, he liked playing baseball and hockey more than basketball. Even though people told him to play basketball because he was tall, he didn’t like it and didn’t want to do what everyone expected.
At 14, he stopped playing hockey because he grew too tall and hoped to play college baseball. However, he was given a chance to play basketball at IMG Academy in Florida.
Although he missed his family, he wasn’t sure about staying. Zach’s mom, Julia, talked to him and convinced him not to quit basketball. She told him:
“I said to Zach, ‘I just want to make sure you don’t have any regrets.’ You can try and if it doesn’t happen, then it doesn’t happen. You don’t need to do this, but it depends if you want it.”
Now, with his mom beside him, Zach has become good at college basketball, and people think he might even go to the NBA someday.
